I was sent these beauties (pastels/pencils from Caran d’Ache) to play around with. They looked so smart I actually felt a bit nervous about scuffing them up. I’m not very familiar with pastels – I only remember using ones at school which snapped the moment they touched the paper but these were pretty resistant and the colours were beautiful. Here’s some of doodles…

I tried them out on watercolour paper – looking back at the photos the outlines look a little bit like embroidery. They worked more like a chalk so I tried spreading the colours around with a damp paintbrush. I’ll be honest, it was like being back at school again – figuring out what techniques to use. Smudging and scribbling with them on slightly wet paper made pretty results, the colours became really thick and vibrant… impossible not to draw wiggly hair…

This is probably the prettiest mouth I’ve ever drawn – don’t ask me how I did it though, scribbles and water (the colours blended really well).

The black and white were probably my favourite to work with. The colours looked beautiful on grey card – the white especially (even though it’s probably not showing up as strong in the pictures). The grey card tests turned out to be my favourite in the end…
